Sonia Sotomayor Appointed US Supreme Court Judge
Sunday, 09 August 2009
sonia_sotomayor.jpgJudge Sonia Sotomayor has arguably lived the American dream.

She was born to a Puerto Rican family and grew up in a public housing project in the South Bronx. Her father was a factory worker with a third-grade education, and died when Sotomayor was nine years old. Her mother raised Sotomayor while working as a nurse.

And her amazing story goes on and on...

Sotomayor graduated as valedictorian of her class at Blessed Sacrament and at Cardinal Spellman High School in New York. She won a scholarship to Princeton where she continued to excel, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

Tackling South Africa's rape epidemic
Wednesday, 29 July 2009
A rather chilling and sobering story By Nikki Jecks  from the BBC News
An important story to share, think about and consider what can be done.

The trial of three of the men accused of the rape and murder of one of South Africa's leading sportswomen, the openly gay football star Eudy Simalane, resumes in South Africa on Wednesday.

Thirty-one lesbian women have been reported raped and murdered in homophobic attacks in South Africa since 1998.

But according to Triangle - a gay rights organisation - only two cases of "corrective rape" have ever made it to the courts; there has been only one conviction.

"This is a sad fact in this country generally, women are very reluctant to come forward," says Sharon Cox from Triangle.

"Corrective rape" is the term used to describe the rape of a lesbian woman by a man to either punish her, or "correct" her behaviour.

Ms Cox says rape is power is South Africa.

"The thinking is, all it takes is one good man to cure you of being a lesbian," she told the BBC's Newshour programme.

Gang rape

South Africa has one of the highest rates of sexual violence in the world. More than 54,000 cases are reported to the police each year. Among men in their early 20s, it has become almost a game.

Another of the group sitting in a bar in the city of Kempton Park, north-east of Johannesburg explains how it works. He says the friends hide under the bed until the first man is finished and has left the room, then they take turns having sex with the woman, pretending to be first man.

"The room is dark and the girl is not even going to notice if it's the second guy sleeping with her," explains another friend in the group.

"Most of the time when it does happen, the girl is taking some drinks, but she is quite aware of what is happening."

At the heart of these different manifestations of rape are deep-rooted cultural stereotypes - that men have ownership over women, and are of greater importance.

South Africa has the highest incidence of rape amongst Interpol states
1 in 4 men admit to rape
Nearly 150 women are raped every day
More than 54,000 cases of rape were "reported" in 2006 (unreported statistic is anyone's guess!)
Based on reports by the Medical Research Council, Interpol

Despised And Destroyed Because She Is A Dalit
Thursday, 16 July 2009
indian_slave_girl.jpgBindu, a dalit from the Deha, an especially despised nomadic caste, sits with her grandmother in what is left of their home. She had incurred the wrath of the local upper castes by refusing an offer from the son of the town leader of 50 rupees (about $1) for sex. So their house was torched and their belongings thrown into the river.

India’s daily injustices are daunting. But they are being confronted. Volunteers for Social Justice (VSJ), a group devoted to freeing people from bondage. It has brought the release of some 30,000 since it was founded in 1985.

This image taken by UK politician Pete Pattison is from a photo essay in The Economist on slavery in modern-day India, where poor people may not be in chains, but they are shackled by debt, paid virtually nothing and treated harshly.

29-Year-Old Jordanian Gets 7.5 Years For Killing Sister Who Had Been Raped
Wednesday, 08 July 2009
Susan: I can't helped but feel sickened when I read stories such as this one. Honestly, it makes me physically ill.

A court on Tuesday halved the jail term of a 29-year-old man who shot his raped sister 12 times and killed her "in the name of honour", a judicial official said.

The Criminal Court initially sentenced the man to 15 years with hard labour for killing his sister in 2008 in Mwaqqar, but immediately reduced it to seven-and-a-half years. The judgement can be appealed within 30 days.

"The woman disappeared from home for six months after she was raped last year," the official told AFP.

"Police kept the woman in custody for her protection and later handed her over to the family, but the brother shot her 12 times in different parts of her body once she arrived home, killing her immediately."

UN Says Arab Women Still Struggling For Equality
Wednesday, 08 July 2009
school_girls_uae.jpgWomen continue to struggle to gain equal access to education, the job market and political life in much of the Arab world, according to the UN’s latest report on combating poverty.

The yearbook on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), released by Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary general, reveals that global economic slump is undermining attempts to tackle hunger, illiteracy and gender equality.

Researchers highlight the “particularly dismal” progress on women’s rights in parts of the Arab world, where women suffer as second-class citizens in politics, education and the workplace.

The so-called Western Asia region, which encompasses Arabia, the Levant, Iraq, Turkey and Cyprus, has a disproportionately low number of girls in schools and what researchers describe as “extremely low” job prospects for women.

Leyla Cries By Day, And Shouts From The Rooftop By Night
Saturday, 27 June 2009

Tonight, as she has every night since Iran's disputed election, Leyla will walk up to the rooftop of her apartment building in Tehran and join the collective shouts of "Allahu Akbar" ("God is great").

Her protest is not confined to the roof of her building. Leyla, who has never been politically active before, has attended all the Tehran street rallies to protest against the alleged fraudulent results of the presidential election which saw Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad returned to power.

"I have gone every day and I have cried every day," she says.

The protests initially saw hundreds of thousands take to the streets demanding a recount. But as the violence has escalated and with the security forces very visibly present in main squares and crossroads, the protests have shrunk - some rallies this week numbered in the hundreds, say witnesses.

"Of course I'm scared of being injured or killed," she says. "When I water my plants these days I cannot help crying because I feel how much I love to live. But I'm also fed up with this feeling of fear that has penetrated my soul for three decades under this regime."

There's a place in your heart, and I know that it is love
And this place could be much brighter than tomorrow
And if you really try, you'll find there's no need to cry
In this place you'll feel there's no hurt or sorrow

There are ways to get there
If you care enough for the living
Make a little space make a better place...

Heal the world, make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place, for you and for me

If you want to know why
There's a love that cannot lie
Love is strong
It only cares for joyful giving
If we try we shall see in this bliss
We cannot feel fear or dread
We stop existing and start living

Then it feels that always love's enough for us growing
So make a better world
Make a better world...
