My Grandmother's Recipe for Soy Sauce Chicken

I’ve been collecting notes for a memoir of my childhood growing up in Malaysia and my coming of age in England.

I got to thinking about all the people who have been in my life. Some of them, like my family, are a part of me and others, like friends and my partner, have become an important part of my life. Others have come and gone or just passed through. But many have left something behind - curious legacies that, taken together, make up the fabric of who I am.

In these notes, I write about some of these curious legacies. Today: My Grandmother’ Recipe for Soy Sauce Chicken

This is a tribute  to my Mum:

My Mum is amazing and I want to tell the world.

In the fall of 1987, before there was a North Texas Amputee Support Group, we received a call from friends in New York about a young girl in Houston who had lost both arms at the shoulders. She and her family needed help.

Stacey McInroe Conner, a wonderful volunteer and member of the North Texas Amputee Support Group, died at 4:35 a.m on Thursday May 24, 1990.

Many longer-term residents of Dubai will vividly remember Carole Gesman (nee Parker), who recently lost her gallant eight-month battle with cancer; she died in Florida at the age of 49.

My friend Lynn is my unsung hero, the one who cares, supports, loves and gives beyond her own needs.

Lynn is the one who is the guiding light for those who are lost. The one who, when others are falling by the wayside, will carry on. And for these attributes? Lynn asks nothing in return.

My Mum, Jill Lewis, had breast cancer and a mastectomy to deal with back in the 1970s when she was in her thirties .

She was ill for a long while and then, to the outward world, and especially to her children, she appeared to be well again.

All tributes to my best friend, love, fiancee - Nawal.

Being with her is the perfect thing that has happened to my life...

Friends since we were 5 years old, we have walked a long, winding path through life together.

We have played, laughed, fought, cried and somehow worked our way through to today. Your friendship is a great blessing in my life, a constant that I know will remain no matter what.
