My Mom has Alzheimer's.

She doesn't know what time of the day it is, let alone the day of the week, or the month.

Sometimes she doesn't know even know the season of the year. Or what she just ate. Or the name of her cat.

img_2605.jpgOne day soon she won't know who I am either.

But even in her demented state of mind, she knows it's wrong to torture people, she knows that sometimes you

One Young Woman Dies In The Street In Tehran

Posted by Susan in violenceinspirationhopegirlsfamilyfailureconnectionconflictcommunity

Susan notes:
I wrote this blog entry the day after Neda Agha Soltan was killed in the street in Tehran in June 2009. Today, on February 11, 2010, tensions run high in Iran. People protest in the streets, and the government continues to use imprisonment, torture, and executions against its own citizens. Today, people worldwide still hear the sound of Neda Agha Soltan dying silently in the

As post-election trauma and violence sweep across Iran, the powerfully positive forces of music and dance are also at work transforming our world.

Today, I was exposed to two inspirational musical initiatives, one of which I’d like to share with you now (I’m saving the other one for later).

There are three fabulous videos in this post; they tell a sequential story.
But if you choose to

One year ago today, I wrote my first-ever blog entry (Like A Virgin?), in which I joined "the millions online who share their joys, sorrows, thoughts, ideas, opinions and more, in a worldwide orgy of information."

At the time, I thought it marked the end of a journey, and so I wrote:
Most of the time I’ve traveled alone. I got lost, stumbled, tripped, fell, took wrong turns, and had to

On War, Soldiers And Being Apart

Posted by Susan in violencelovehopeheartfeelingsfamilyconnectionconflict

A few weeks ago, on a flight to Kuwait, I met a young American soldier who was headed back to Iraq after a two-week furlough with his wife in Australia.

Of the five years they’ve been married, they’ve spent a total of only two together, because he’s been serving in Iraq for most of their married life.

I learned during our conversation that his tours of duty are each one year long,

It’s hard to know where to begin. Or whom I should thank first.

With Terry Netto of People Potential? For inviting me to the February Initiatives of Change conference held in Kuala Lumpur? If it hadn’t been for that invitation, I wouldn’t have come to Malaysia this year in the first place.

Terry connected me to Susanna who in turn introduced to me to an impressive list of amazing

Islamic Feminist Activist Says Change Needed

Zainah Anwar’s great grandfather, an Islamic scholar who divided his time between Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, married an Abyssinian slave girl he bought in Mecca.

Her grandfather had a total of seven wives (not all at the same time).

She says her mother waited on her father hand and foot, and her brother never did a lick of housework – not the kind of family history one might expect

Older, Wiser, Better And More Silver Today :)

Today is my birthday.

Well, okay, today isn’t EXACTLY my birthday, because when you write something for publication, wherever it might be, there’s usually a delay between the time you write it, and the time you see it “in print,” or in this case “online.”

Unless of course you’re commenting on something like YouTube for example; when you hit send – presto! – there are your words captured
